Listening and speaking practice

Conversations pitched just past what you know

Hebbi gives you short spoken dialogues, each chosen because it sits a little beyond what you already understand. You listen, check what you caught, and say lines back out loud. Every word you meet is remembered, so the next dialogue fits you a little better.

How a dialogue goes

Each dialogue is a short everyday scene, voiced by its characters and taken one line at a time.

  1. Listen first

A line plays with its words hidden, so your ear does the work. Play it again if you need to, then reveal it.

  2. Mark what you missed

The line appears with its translation. Tap the words you didn't catch or didn't understand, and any word for its meaning in your own language. What you mark tells Hebbi which words need more time.

  3. Say it yourself

In a speaking turn you see what a line means and say it in the language you're learning. Hebbi listens, shows what you said against the line, and tells you when you said the same thing in other words.

Built around what you already know

Chosen for you, one dialogue at a time

There is no fixed course to work through. Hebbi keeps a large pool of dialogues and picks your next one from it: mostly words you know, with a few new ones. Language teachers call this i+1, input one step past where you are.

Each dialogue is chosen to stretch you just a little.

Every word, remembered

Hebbi keeps an estimate of how well you know each word you meet, for listening and for speaking, and updates it every time you hear or say it. That estimate is what your next dialogue is chosen from.

Plenty to choose from

The dialogues are written in advance by an AI model, across everyday situations and levels, and voiced with synthetic speech. Because there are many, the one you get can be the one that fits.

Ears first

Your level is shown on the CEFR scale (A1, A2, B1 and so on) and moves as you practice. Speaking practice opens once your listening has found its footing.

The ear learns before the tongue.

Ask about any line

Wondering why something is said the way it is? Ask about the line, by typing or by voice, and an AI model answers about its words, grammar or tone. Your questions are kept so you can find them again.

Your pace

Choose how far each dialogue stretches you: Gentle, Balanced, or Stretching.

How many new words show up in each dialogue. Gentle sticks to words you mostly know. Stretching brings in more new ones.
